Are Business Cards Really Dead?
February 13, 2012 in Blog
Lately, it has been trendy to blog about the death of the business card. It seems like every other person has a smartphone or a digital contact card through sites like About.me, so why would anyone bother printing their own business cards anymore?
A business card isn’t just a good idea, it is still mandatory if you want a chance of standing out or being noticed by potential clients or customers. There are still three things a business card can do that their digital counterparts can not:
1) The business card is physical, material. Digital information hides behind dark screens until it is asked for. A card has a tangible presence that exists on bulletin boards and desktops long after it is handed over.
2) The business card is still the only elegant way to invite yourself into a contact list. Dozens of smartphone apps allow you to “bump”, “swipe”, or “flick” your vCard information into someone else’s phone. Once there, however, your information will likely be lost among the hundreds of other phone numbers and emails that person has. You’re also assuming that your future contact, potential client, or possible business partner will even have a smart phone or is willing to bother using it within a social setting.
3) Business cards are still asked for. The next time you are at a meeting with a new client, at a trade show, or a networking event it is almost assured someone will ask for your card. How will you look when you don’t have one?
Business cards aren’t going anywhere. In fact, if designed well and used correctly, your business card will give you significant leverage at your next networking event or meeting.
The design of your business card should reflect who you and your business. From the size and the weight of the cardstock to the colors and fonts, everything on the card makes subtle suggestions for your new contact to remember you by. Having a business card is an investment you wont realize you are missing until you don’t have them
Your business card can also work to enhance your online presence. Leaving it up to search engines or shared links for someone to find you could bring them, and your potential business, to the wrong person. A business card, printed with exact information and URLs to your online portfolio or website, prevents the crossing of any kind of wires or signals.
